Am I Being Recruited?

If a college coach contacts you, you may wonder, “Am I being recruited?” Don't be afraid to ask the coach directly "Are you recruiting me?" Also, it is important to determine early in the recruiting process whether you are admissible to the school. Do you fit the accepted student profile and is it likely you will be admitted? You can visit the school's website to find the statistics on the last year's admitted class. Some programs may be able to do a pre-read to determine the possibility of acceptance and financial aid.

Don’t be afraid to ask the coach directly ‘Are you recruiting me?’

If you are actively being recruited by a college coach, make sure it is a good fit for you academically in terms of majors offered and, also, in the event you cannot play (e.g. in the event of an injury).

Athletic participation is part of the college selection process but it should be considered along with other important factors such as cost, location, majors offered, graduation rates, job placement, etc.

If the school seems like a good fit, start to research the sports program:

  1. Check out the online roster and see if there may be room for you at your position.

  2. Determine the graduation rate of the athletic program.

  3. Make sure you feel comfortable with the coaching staff. In the event you choose their school, you will be spending a lot of time with them!
